Webinar on Gender-Centred Harm Reduction in Africa
Essential gender-centred harm reduction services are now being implemented in many places to respond to the major gap in tailored services for women who use drugs. The inclusion and acknowledgement of this critical need in Africa is only slowly gaining recognition. In 2023, a core dedicated group of women working in harm reduction in Africa came together to highlight the challenges they were facing and showcase the incredible community work that is being carried out. This webinar featured The African Women in Harm Reduction Group, who showcased some models of harm reduction services being offered to women, which can be adapted to contexts in Africa.
About AWHRG
The African Women in Harm Reduction Group (AWHRG) is a platform for discussing, collaborating, learning, and sharing resources for African women involved in harm reduction.
The group emphasise the importance of establishing a dedicated platform for African women in harm reduction and aims to tackle the array of problems we face. Breaking cultural norms and eradicating the stigma associated with drug use is essential in providing effective harm reduction services to women, with a primary emphasis on offering support and assistance to individuals struggling with substance use disorders.
AWHRG focus on collaborative advocacy, resource allocation, and funding opportunities to support African women in harm reduction. This platform is essential for addressing this demographic’s unique challenges and needs. Through collaboration, advocacy, and resource-sharing, we can work towards providing effective and inclusive harm reduction services for women in Africa.
