Tuesday, 28 April 2026 (Belfast, UK) The 29th Harm Reduction International Conference (HR27) will take place in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 9-12 May 2027, convenor Harm Reduction International (HRI) announced today. The biennial event is the premier global gathering for policymakers, researchers and advocates that addresses the issues of health and human rights at the intersection of drug policies.

The selection of Belfast underscores a commitment to holding the conference in locations that reflect the event´s core values of social justice and community resilience. Following decades of political conflict, Belfast’s transition toward peace and its ongoing efforts in self-determination provides a significant backdrop for global discussions on political and public health reform.

“We seek host cities for our conference that mirror the spirit of our movement, where cutting-edge research and grassroots advocacy can come together to push for change,” said Catherine Cook, Executive Director of HRI.

“At HR27, we will spotlight how local and regional leaders are mobilising to protect health and human rights in an increasingly complex global landscape. Belfast’s history of challenging entrenched systems makes it the ideal setting for discussion that will shape the future of harm reduction.”

The conference will highlight strategies to address the existential threats to global health and human rights, focusing on evidence-based policies that prioritise dignity and rights.

“In 2027, the global harm reduction movement will meet in a city that offers enduring lessons in social justice and the importance of community-led solutions,” said Iain Cameron, Project Manager, Extern Harm Reduction Services, Belfast, the local partner for HR27.

“We are proud to host this conference and to share how our local experiences can contribute to a more equitable and healthy future for all.”

HR27 is expected to draw over 1,000 delegates from over 80 countries, fostering collaboration between high-level stakeholders and grassroots advocates and service providers to advance public health outcomes worldwide.
