CAF America is a US 501(c)(3) public charity that enables American donors to support UK-based organisations like HRI in a way that is tax-efficient in both countries.

Dual tax efficiency Your donation qualifies for a US federal tax deduction. At the same time, HRI can claim UK Gift Aid on your gift, allowing us to reclaim an additional 20–25% from HMRC on top of what you donate.

Your gift goes further Because tax relief is available in both the US and the UK, your donation has a significantly higher real-world value. Gift Aid alone can add up to 25% to the amount HRI receives.

No cross-border complexity CAF America handles all compliance and reporting requirements on your behalf — for both the IRS in the US and HMRC in the UK. There is no need to manage direct international transfers yourself.

Designed for dual taxpayers The fund is built for donors with transatlantic ties, whether you are UK-domiciled and resident, non-domiciled and resident, or non-domiciled and non-resident.

To begin, visit the CAF America website at cafamerica.org. Select “Donate” or search for Harm Reduction International in their charity repository, then complete the online donation form with HRI’s details.

Step 1: Fund your donation

All donations to CAF America must be made in US Dollars (USD). You can give by cheque, wire transfer, or credit card. Please note that CAF America charges an administrative fee for this service, typically around 8%. Check their website for the current rate before donating.

Step 2: Receive your tax documentation

Once your donation has been processed, CAF America will issue you with a tax receipt. You can use this to claim a deduction for your charitable contribution on your US tax return.

Step 3: Your gift reaches us.

CAF America will review HRI’s documentation, then wire the funds directly to us in GBP. HRI can then claim UK Gift Aid, adding further value to your original gift.
